My realist still life oil paintings are always painted exclusively from life, never from photographs. In this way, I capture the exact quality of light as seen by a human eye. Though my paintings seem timeless, they are illuminated by a modern light source, creating dramatic contrasts between dark and light, distinguishing them from the more muted light of classical works. The techniques that I use, I learned from studying the old masters, adapting them to modern tools and my own sensibilities. My oil paintings are built up from a series of layers, contrasting heavy impasto with delicate, thin glazes. The contrast of these textures gives the paintings depth and complexity. Though my paintings are highly detailed, they are essentialized, including only the important and discarding the non-essential.
